A journey is a journey made to a point more or less distant personal purposes (tourism) or professional (business). The journey has grown considerably and democratized, in the twentieth century avecl'avènement of modern transportation and more rapid and comfortable, the railway first and then the automobile and the airplane.

People traveling are called "travelers", or in some modes of transport "passengers".

However, at the same time the world "shrinks" as a result of rapid transportation, its identification in different forms (maps, images, news, ...) increases, leaving less room for surprise traveler. Marc Augé and talks about the impossible journey, "one that we will never again, one that could help us discover new landscapes and other men."
